Aura Reading: How to See, Interpret, and Cleanse Your Energy Field

What Is the Aura?
The aura is the luminous energy field that surrounds and interpenetrates the physical body. In esoteric traditions worldwide — Hindu, Theosophical, Kabbalistic, Shamanic — this field has been described as the visible manifestation of the soul: the light of consciousness as it inhabits and radiates through matter. In modern biofield science, measurable electromagnetic fields around the human body (detectable with SQUID magnetometers and gas discharge visualization technology) partially validate what mystics have described for millennia.
The aura is not a single uniform field. It is a multi-layered system of interpenetrating energy fields, each vibrating at a different frequency and encoding different information about the state of the being. The colors, textures, clarity, and extent of these layers convey precise information to a trained perceiver — information about physical health, emotional state, mental patterns, and spiritual development.
Most people are capable of developing some degree of aura perception. Like any perceptual skill, it requires practice, relaxation, and the willingness to trust subtle impressions before they become vivid and unmistakable.
The Seven Layers of the Aura
The Theosophical tradition, developed most extensively by C.W. Leadbeater and Annie Besant in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, describes seven main layers of the aura corresponding to the seven planes of existence. This map is the most widely used framework in contemporary aura work.
Layer 1: The Etheric Body
The etheric body is the closest to the physical — it extends roughly half an inch to two inches beyond the skin and appears as a pale blue or gray-white band that follows the exact contours of the physical form. It is the energetic blueprint of the physical body and is directly related to physical vitality. When this layer appears dim, contracted, or has holes or tears, it often indicates physical depletion, illness, or areas where prana is not flowing adequately. Healers working in this layer affect the health of the corresponding physical organs and systems.
Layer 2: The Emotional Body
Extending approximately one to four inches beyond the physical body, the emotional body is the most dynamic layer — constantly shifting in color and movement in response to emotional states. It is not uniform in shape like the etheric, but bulges, contracts, and churns with the flow of feeling. Its colors are typically more vivid and varied than the etheric layer. This is where emotional wounds, unexpressed feelings, and emotional patterns are held. It is also where the most immediate energy exchanges happen between people in close proximity — the layer responsible for the experience of “picking up” someone else’s emotional state.
Layer 3: The Mental Body
Extending four to eight inches from the physical, the mental body carries the quality of the person’s thoughts, beliefs, and mental activity. It tends to be predominantly yellow in color (reflecting the mental plane’s association with the element of air and the frequency of thought). When it is bright, clear, and structured, it indicates a focused, disciplined mind. When it appears muddy, contracted, or shot through with dark or murky colors, it suggests mental confusion, limiting beliefs, or entrenched thought patterns that are affecting the person’s overall wellbeing.
Layer 4: The Astral Body
This layer bridges the lower (physical/emotional/mental) planes and the higher (spiritual) planes. It extends roughly six inches to one foot beyond the physical. The astral body is particularly active during the dream state and during deep meditation. It is where relationship cords and attachments exist — the energetic connections between people that persist beyond physical proximity. The astral body of someone deeply in love literally reaches out toward the beloved even at great distance.
Layer 5: The Etheric Template
This is the template for the etheric body — it exists on the spiritual plane and contains the ideal blueprint for the physical form. It extends roughly one to two feet from the physical and tends to appear as a negative-space field — like a grid or matrix containing the potential forms that the lower bodies will eventually embody. Healers who work at this level are working with the patterns that underlie chronic physical and energetic conditions.
Layer 6: The Celestial Body
Extending approximately two to three feet from the physical, the celestial body is the emotional plane of the spirit — the level at which unconditional love, spiritual ecstasy, and divine emotion are experienced. It appears as opalescent, shimmering pastel colors — delicate gold, silver, and luminous pastels that seem to generate their own light. Access to this layer in meditation produces the experiences mystics describe as bliss, grace, or direct divine love.
Layer 7: The Ketheric Template (Causal Body)
The outermost layer, extending three or more feet from the physical, is the highest vibrational frequency of the aura system. It contains the entire history of the soul across all lifetimes — the accumulated wisdom and karma of the whole incarnation journey. It appears as an egg-shaped golden-white light that contains and protects all inner layers. Healers and highly developed mystics are the ones most likely to be able to perceive and work with this layer.
Aura Colors and Their Meanings
Red
Red in the aura indicates strong life force, physical vitality, passion, and material ambition. Bright, clear red signals healthy physical energy, courage, and groundedness. Dark or muddy red may indicate anger, unprocessed aggression, or obsession with survival issues. Red is most commonly associated with the root chakra region but can appear throughout the aura.
Orange
Orange in the aura indicates creativity, emotional vitality, joy, and social energy. A bright orange aura suggests someone who is emotionally open, creative, and engaged with life. A dull or brownish orange can indicate unresolved emotional issues, blocked creativity, or addictive tendencies. Orange is associated with the sacral chakra and the emotional body.
Yellow
Yellow indicates mental activity, optimism, intellect, and personal power. Bright yellow signals a sharp, analytical mind, optimism, and confident self-expression. Pale yellow appearing around the head often indicates early spiritual awakening or psychic development. A dark, greenish-yellow can indicate the mental energy of fear, criticism, or analytical overthinking.
Green
Green is the color of the heart chakra, healing, and growth. Clear, bright green indicates a natural healer, a compassionate heart, and someone who is actively growing and developing. Dark or murky green can indicate jealousy, resentment, or possessiveness. Healers and teachers often have significant green in their auras, particularly in the hands and the heart region.
Blue
Blue indicates communication, truth, calmness, and spiritual perception. Light blue suggests clarity, honesty, and genuine care for others. Royal blue indicates highly developed intuition and clairvoyance. Dark blue can suggest difficulty trusting oneself or others, or a tendency toward overly controlled communication. Blue auras are frequently seen in teachers, writers, therapists, and spiritual workers.
Indigo
Indigo indicates deep spiritual perception, third eye development, and access to psychic awareness. People with significant indigo in their aura tend to be highly intuitive, sensitive to energy, and often described as “old souls.” They may have difficulty with highly materialistic environments and need regular solitude to restore their sensitivity.
Violet and Purple
Violet indicates spiritual mastery, psychic ability, and the integration of spiritual and material worlds. Purple auras are associated with people who are naturally mystic — drawn to the deeper dimensions of existence, capable of elevated states of consciousness, and often involved in spiritual leadership or healing.
White
White or brilliant light in the aura indicates spiritual purification, divine connection, and (at its highest expression) enlightened consciousness. White in the aura is relatively rare in ordinary circumstances and when seen authentically indicates someone who has done significant spiritual work and achieved a high degree of alignment with their higher self.
Gold
Gold indicates divine wisdom, spiritual protection, and the highest spiritual awakening. A golden aura is associated with highly evolved spiritual teachers and saints. It also appears temporarily in most people’s auras during peak spiritual experiences, moments of great compassion, or deep meditation.
Black and Dark Patches
Darkness in the aura is not evil — it is blocked or stagnant energy. Black or very dark patches indicate areas where energy has become contracted, unprocessed trauma is held, or where chronic patterns of thought and feeling have calcified. These areas particularly benefit from targeted energy healing work.
How to See Auras: The Peripheral Vision Technique
The most reliable method for beginning to see auras is the peripheral vision technique. The physical eyes have two types of photoreceptors: cones (concentrated in the fovea, for detailed color vision in direct light) and rods (concentrated in the periphery, extremely sensitive to light and motion). Aura perception is primarily a rod function — which is why direct staring suppresses it while soft, peripheral vision enables it.
Step-by-Step Practice
- Setup: Ask a friend to stand in front of a plain, neutral-colored wall in diffused, even lighting (avoid direct sunlight or fluorescent lighting). Alternatively, practice on yourself in a bathroom mirror with a white wall behind you.
- Soft gaze: Instead of focusing sharply on the person, allow your eyes to relax and go slightly out of focus — as if you are looking at a spot on the wall two feet behind them. Some people find it helpful to slightly cross their eyes.
- Peripheral attention: Without moving your gaze point, notice what you see in the area just around the edges of the person’s body — particularly around the head and shoulders, where the aura tends to be most visible.
- Allow, don’t force: The first signs of the aura are often very subtle — a slight shimmer, a sense of heat waves, a faint brightening of the air around the person. Do not try to see it — simply be willing to notice whatever is there.
- Note colors: After you can perceive the basic light field, begin noticing if any color impression appears. These first color impressions may be very faint or fleeting — honor them rather than dismissing them as imagination.
Practice Objects
Before working with people, practice on plants and hands. Place your own hand against a white background, relax your gaze, and look just past the edge of your fingers. Most people can see a faint white or blue-white band within their first few practice sessions. Plants are even easier — the etheric field of a healthy plant is relatively easy to perceive and excellent for building confidence in your emerging aura sight.
Aura Photography and Technology
Kirlian photography (developed by Semyon Kirlian in 1939) captures corona discharge around objects and has been used to photograph the etheric field surrounding living tissue. More recently, gas discharge visualization (GDV) cameras and bioelectromagnetic field imaging technology have produced more sophisticated measurements. While these tools do not capture the full aura as described in metaphysical literature, they do provide objective evidence of measurable energy fields around living beings that respond to emotional and physical states — providing a bridge between scientific measurement and experiential aura perception.
Aura Cleansing Methods
The aura accumulates energetic debris: other people’s emotions picked up in close contact, thought forms from environments, the residue of our own difficult emotional states, and various forms of psychic static. Regular cleansing is as important for the energy body as bathing is for the physical body.
Salt Bath Cleansing
Add 1-2 cups of Himalayan salt or sea salt (not table salt — too refined) to a warm bath. Add a few drops of essential oil — lavender, frankincense, or rosemary are excellent for energetic cleansing. Soak for 20 minutes with the intention of releasing all energy that does not belong to you and that does not serve your highest good. Visualize the salt water drawing out the debris. Drain the bath with intention, visualizing all released energy going down the drain. Pat dry rather than rubbing — the towel friction can re-stimulate the energy field before it has settled.
Smoke Cleansing (Smudging)
Using white sage, palo santo, cedar, or frankincense resin on charcoal, move the smoke around your entire body with a feather or your hand. Begin at the crown and work downward, paying special attention to the aura around the head, shoulders, and solar plexus. Hold the intention of clearing all stagnant, foreign, or low-vibration energy from your field. Open a window or door during and after the practice so cleared energy has an exit.
Cold Water Cleansing
The simplest and most immediately accessible cleansing method: end your shower with 30-60 seconds of cold water while visualizing all accumulated energetic debris being washed away. Cold water is a rapid aura refresher — it contracts and seals the energy field after the warm water has opened and released it, leaving the aura cleaner and more defined.
Visualization Cleansing
Sit in meditation and visualize a beam of brilliant white-gold light entering through your crown and moving slowly downward through every layer of your aura. See it as a gentle pressure-washer, dissolving and carrying away anything muddy, heavy, contracted, or foreign. When the light has moved through the entire field, see it shoot out through the soles of your feet into the earth, carrying all debris with it. Then seal your aura by visualizing a bubble of golden-white light forming around you, two feet in every direction, permeable to love and high-vibration energy but impermeable to psychic static.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the ability to see auras something you are born with, or can anyone learn it?
The capacity to perceive auras exists on a spectrum, and while some people are born with unusually developed aura sensitivity (often associated with synesthesia, certain neurological profiles, or childhood experiences of heightened sensory awareness), the basic ability to perceive the etheric field and simple color impressions can be developed by most people with consistent practice. Research by brain scientist Wilse Webb and others has shown that different modes of visual perception — including the kind of soft, defocused gaze used in aura reading — can be trained. Children tend to be more naturally capable of aura perception than adults, probably because cultural conditioning has not yet fully suppressed non-ordinary perception. Adults can recover this capacity through practice. Most people with no prior ability can learn to perceive the basic etheric layer (the white-blue shimmer around the body) within a few weeks of daily practice. Full-color aura perception, with clear layer differentiation and accurate interpretation, typically develops over months to years of dedicated practice.
What does it mean if I see colors around people when I was not specifically trying to see their aura?
Spontaneous aura perception — seeing colors or light around people without intentionally looking — is actually a sign of naturally developed (or developing) perceptual sensitivity. This experience is more common than most people realize; many who experience it do not report it because they fear being dismissed or seen as unusual. If you are seeing colors spontaneously around people, several things are worth noting: the colors you see most consistently are likely indicating the dominant energy that person is carrying at that moment. Bright, clear colors are generally positive indicators of vitality and alignment. Dark, murky, or contracted fields warrant more careful energetic discernment in that person’s company. If the spontaneous perceptions are causing distress (visual overwhelm, difficulty distinguishing aura from physical reality), grounding practices and learning to ‘close down’ your perception intentionally are important protective skills to develop.
Can aura reading be used to diagnose illness?
This is an important question that requires careful framing. Experienced aura readers and energy healers do frequently perceive patterns in the aura that correspond to physical health issues — areas of darkness, depletion, or abnormal energy in regions corresponding to specific organs or bodily systems. Some healers have developed impressive track records of identifying health issues this way, and there are clinical studies of therapeutic touch and energy healing that show measurable physiological effects. However, aura reading should never be used as a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment. The appropriate role of aura reading in health contexts is complementary and supportive: identifying areas that need attention, informing energy healing practices that can support (not replace) conventional medical care, and tracking changes in the energy field that may correlate with health improvements. Any practitioner who offers aura reading as a diagnostic tool in place of medical evaluation, or who advises you to avoid medical care based on aura perception, should be approached with significant caution.
How do I know if I am actually seeing an aura or just experiencing a visual artifact like an afterimage?
This is an excellent, discerning question, and the honest answer is that in early stages of aura practice, it can be genuinely difficult to distinguish between trained aura perception and normal visual phenomena. Afterimages are created when the eye’s photoreceptors become fatigued from sustained stimulation and then produce a contrasting image when the gaze shifts. They are complementary in color (a red object produces a green afterimage) and shift position when your eyes move. A genuine aura impression, by contrast, moves with the person rather than with your eye position, does not appear in a complementary color, and tends to be perceived in the peripheral field rather than as a direct image. Another test: if you are seeing an aura, shifting your focus away and back should maintain the impression. An afterimage disappears quickly when your gaze moves. With practice and honest self-observation, the difference becomes clearer. Many practitioners find that what begins as uncertain and potentially artifactual gradually becomes unmistakably distinct as their perceptual training deepens.
