Self-love is not vanity or indulgence. It is the capacity to treat oneself with the same care, patience, and compassion one would offer a beloved friend โ and it is, for most people, the most difficult spiritual practice of all. The inner critic, the self-comparison, the shame that speaks in second-person (“you’re not enough”) โ these are not the truth of who you are. They are learned patterns, absorbed from others, and they can be unlearned through deliberate practice.
Metta โ Pali for loving-kindness โ is the foundational compassion practice in Theravada Buddhism. Most people find it easy to extend loving-kindness to loved ones or strangers and profoundly difficult to extend it to themselves. Which is precisely why beginning with the self is the practice.
Sit comfortably. Place one hand on your heart. Repeat silently, with as much genuine feeling as you can access:
When resistance arises โ and it will โ notice it with curiosity rather than judgment. The resistance itself is the thing that needs loving. “Even this resistance โ may I be kind to this too.”
Mirror work โ looking into your own eyes in a mirror and speaking loving or affirming words to yourself โ is one of the most confronting and transformative practices in self-healing work. Louise Hay, who healed herself of cancer and built one of the most influential self-help publishing companies in history, considered it the foundation of all inner work.
Why it is so hard: we rarely look at ourselves without judgment. The mirror activates the self-evaluation mechanism instantly. Mirror work uses this activation deliberately โ intercepting the habitual critical response and replacing it with deliberate kindness.
How to practise:
Much of adult self-criticism originates in the inner child โ the emotional record of early experiences, particularly those involving shame, rejection, or inadequacy. Inner child work creates a reparenting relationship with these early parts of the self.
Guided practice:
The body is the most common battlefield for self-hatred. A body appreciation practice โ distinct from body neutrality or toxic positivity โ involves shifting attention from how the body looks to what the body does:
