Thich Nhat Hanh Quotes — Collected Wisdom

Thich Nhat Hanh (1926–2022) was ordained as a Vietnamese Zen monk at sixteen and
spent the war years organising relief work in villages under bombardment — the practice
he later called engaged Buddhism, meaning that meditation and social action are not two
activities. Martin Luther King Jr. nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. He
was refused re-entry to Vietnam and lived in exile for thirty-nine years, founding Plum
Village in southwest France in 1982.

He wrote more than a hundred books in Vietnamese, French and English. The Miracle
of Mindfulness
(1975) began as a letter to a colleague running a relief organisation
under wartime pressure, which is the context most people quoting it do not have.

“The present moment is the only moment available to us, and it is the door to all moments.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

“Because you are alive, everything is possible.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

“Smile, breathe, and go slowly.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

“To love without knowing how to love wounds the person we love.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

“Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

“The most precious gift we can offer others is our presence. When mindfulness embraces those we love, they will bloom like flowers.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

“If you are looking for the Buddha, look for him in the midst of the ordinary activities of daily life.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

“Suffering is not enough. Life is both dreadful and wonderful. To practice meditation is to be in touch with both aspects.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

“Many people think of meditation as something you do sitting cross-legged. But meditation is simply the effort to know what is happening.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

“My actions are my only true belongings. I cannot escape the consequences of my actions.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

“I have arrived, I am home, in the here, in the now. I am solid, I am free. In the ultimate I dwell.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

“Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

“The healing of ourselves is the healing of the world.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

“To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

“Peace is present right here and now, in ourselves and in everything we do and see.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

Deliberately simple, not simplistic

The plainness of his sentences is a decision. He wrote for people with no Buddhist
background, in his third language, and stripped out technical vocabulary that would have
been available to him. What looks like gentleness on a quote card was formed in refugee
camps and under bombing, and the instruction to wash the dishes to wash the dishes came
from someone who had buried the people he worked with.

Interbeing, precisely

His best-known coinage is often softened into a general statement that everything is
connected. What he actually argues is narrower and sharper: no thing has a separate self
that could exist independently of what is not it. His standard demonstration — the sheet
of paper containing the cloud, the forest, the logger, the logger’s breakfast — is not a
poetic flourish but a compressed teaching on dependent origination, the same doctrine the
Pali Canon sets out in far more forbidding language.

The practices behind the quotes

Nearly every line points at something concrete taught at Plum Village: the mindfulness
bell that stops all activity for three breaths, walking meditation timed to the breath,
the gathas — short verses recited while turning on a tap or starting a car, mostly
collected in Present Moment Wonderful Moment. Quotes from him are meant to be
used within the hour, not admired.

Where to begin

The Miracle of Mindfulness is short and practical. Peace Is Every Step
is the most accessible collection of the daily-life practices. Old Path White Clouds
is his retelling of the Buddha’s life and the one long book of his that reads like a
novel.
